The challenges and urgencies on the glass industry's pathway to decarbonisation were discussed at Sisecam's 39th annual conference. Opening the second day, the fireside chat between Sisecam's Sustainability Director Gozde Morkoc, and Dr Bassam Fattouh, Director at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in the UK, highlighted how difficult it will be for hard to abate sectors to decarbonise. Dr Fattouh warned that while decarbonisation is a must, it will cost industrial companies financially.

Sisecam's 39th annual glass conference began this morning in Venice, Italy. The event started with a keynote speech from its CEO Gorkem Elverici who gave an update about the Plant of the Future. Already six of the top 10 largest glass manufacturers had agreed to be part of the collaborative initiative to advance the entire industry. The Plant of the Future aims to bring digitalisation and sustainability to the forefront of glass manufacturing.

Indian manufacturer Vedanta has reported record aluminium production in the past year. For the financial year from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, Vedanta posted its aluminium production of 2,421 thousand tonnes compared to 2,370 thousand tonnes in FY2024. It was an annual increase of 2.11%, slightly lower than the growth rate of 3% the previous year.

O-I Glass is proposing cuts at several of its French manufacturing facilities. It is considering the potential closure of the Vergèze plant, stopping a furnace at its Vayres facility, operational adjustments at its plants in Gironcourt, Puy-Guillaume, and Reims and job cuts in administrative roles within its French headquarters. The company has initiated an information and consultation process with its European and French employee representatives. Up to 320 jobs are at risk.
