SOUTH BEND — Dangerous heat index levels will be in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday as South Bend area residents are asked to find relief by getting into cool areas during the heat wave. Saturday's heat index levels will likely surpass 101 degrees, as air temperatures reach 93, according to the National Weather Service-South Bend. Sunday's highs will reach 95, with sunny skies and winds gusting as high as 25 mph.

South Bend's Friendship Park was renamed Bernice Freeman Neighborhood Friendship Park to honor the late community leader Bernice Blake Freeman. She was recognized with numerous awards, including the MLK Drum Major for Justice Award, the City of South Bend’s Black History Month Award, and the Key to the City. The park's dedication coincided with what would have been Freeman's 83rd birthday.
