Since being approved by the FDA in 1995 for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, alendronate (Fosamax) has been observed to be associated with an unusual type of fracture.1 The fractures occur spontaneously in the subtrochanteric segment of the femur, unrelated to trauma.
