To the Editor I read with interest the Viewpoint by Dr Greenland and colleagues1 and the response by JAMA editors Drs Curfman and Bibbins-Domingo2 regarding the appropriate role of medical journals in health crises associated with war or political disorder.

It is a basic principle in medicine to do no harm. This applies in medical and public health practice and should equally apply in medical journals. Since October 7, 2023, there have been numerous reports in medical and public health journals, as well as a deluge of reports in the general media and social media, about the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
