The ‘New’ New Development Bank: A Decade Plus in the Making By Gregory T. ChinWhen much of the world shut-down at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, in late 2021, the New Development Bank (NDB) welcomed four nations into its membership, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Uruguay and Egypt. These additions, with Uruguay pending, were the first new members since the creation of the Bank by its founding members, the BRICS nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

1 INTRODUCTION Nearly one decade after the official opening of New Development Bank in July 2015, and more than two decades since Jim O'Neill coined the term ‘BRICs’, it is an optimal time to assess the growth and evolution of the BRICS-led Bank. This article serves as the Introduction for the collection of nine articles on New Development Bank (NDB) and the BRICS.

1 INTRODUCTION This article examines Bangladesh's new membership in the BRICS-led New Development Bank (NDB), as the Bangladesh country study for the Special Section on ‘The Evolution of the New Development Bank: A Decade Plus in the Making’, published in Global Policy journal. In September 2021, Bangladesh became the first country outside of the original BRICS founding members (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to join NDB.

AbstractChronic pain syndromes are often refractory to treatment and cause substantial suffering and disability. Pain severity is often measured through subjective report, while objective biomarkers that may guide diagnosis and treatment are lacking. Also, which brain activity underlies chronic pain on clinically relevant timescales, or how this relates to acute pain, remains unclear.
