Behavioural ecologist James Makinson is currently in Tasmania studying the autumn foraging ecology of wild bumblebee colonies. To conduct this research, Mr Makinson and his team from the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, are putting backpacks on bumblebee queens to try and understand why the bees, which aren't native to Tasmania, are thriving in the state.

Premier Jeremony Rockliff has refused to rule out the state's newly built ferry being used to house Ukrainian refugees in Scotland. Edinburgh-based journalist for BBC Scotland, James Delaney, tells Leon Compton on Tasmania Mornings that Scotland has used boats to house refugees before, but that practice was stopped in 2023 after the British Red Cross raised concerns about people experiencing isolation and living in windowless cabins.

Tasmania’s Health Minister, Jacquie Petrusma, says increased demand for midwifery services can be met by the Royal Hobart Hospital and Calvary, after Healthscope confirmed it would no longer provide private midwifery services in Tasmania. “We are already looking at what modifications we might need to make to the Royal Hobart Hospital, and I know Calvary are likewise looking at those,” Ms Petrusma tells Leon Compton on Tasmania Mornings.

The Australian Workers Union is seeking reassurances over the future of northern Tasmania's manganese smelter, which is part of a group of companies that includes Whyalla's steelworks. The Liberty Bell manganese smelter at George Town is part of the GFG Alliance, whose Whyalla steelworks has been forced into administration by the South Australian Government.

Fire fighters are continuing to battle several bushfires burning in difficult terrain on Tasmania's west coast. The evacuation centre is open at the Queenstown Sports Stadium. The facility has seen more than 50 people come through the doors, amid the evacuations from other nearby communities. Anglers are being advised that salmon at a lease in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel are being treated with antibiotics. Huon Aquaculture says it is treating fish with a broad spectrum oxy-tetracycline in its Zuidpool lease near Bruny Island. "Just like humans, pets and other farm animals, fish occasionally require medication," said Huon General Manager, Depha Miedecke. The company said that it was the third time this particular treatment has been used in the past decade.

Tasmania will once again host the world's toughest downhill mountain bike event at the Maydena Bike Park this weekend. The globally recognised event is invite-only, attracting the world's fastest and most progressive mountain bike (MTB) downhill riders. Amongst them is Matt Jones, a professional MTB rider from the United Kingdom. Matt will not only be competing in the event but also recording his experiences for his YouTube account, which has amassed almost one million followers.
