Behavioural ecologist James Makinson is currently in Tasmania studying the autumn foraging ecology of wild bumblebee colonies. To conduct this research, Mr Makinson and his team from the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment, are putting backpacks on bumblebee queens to try and understand why the bees, which aren't native to Tasmania, are thriving in the state.

Tasmania is experiencing a shortage of the most popular antibiotic treatment for children with whooping cough (pertussis) as case numbers rise. Pharmacy Guild Australia Tasmania branch president, Joe O'Malley, says the shortage is being driven by an "unseasonal or unexpected increase in demand" across Australia.

Plans for a new ferry terminal on the River Derwent at Lords Beach, Sandy Bay, were approved at last night's Hobart City Council meeting. Council's transport spokesperson Ryan Posselt explains why the site was selected over one at Wrest Point, and whether parking will be an issue for commuters. "Working with Federal Group, we were unable to secure a deal and that has led to us returning to Lords Beach, which is just next door, south of the casino," Mr Posselt tells ABC Radio Hobart's Jo Spargo.

Tasmanian aurora chaser and author Margaret Sonnemann says a Steve is an aurora-like structure, first discovered in Tasmania in 1864 by astronomer Francis Abbott. Steve stands for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. "It's what we've begun to call a sub-auroral form," Ms Sonnemann tells ABC Hobart Breakfast's Jo Spargo. "Steve has been around as long as we've known about auroras.
