A decision will be made later this week on a trial which could shape the future of care for heart attack patients across South Devon. Politicians from across the spectrum are urging health chiefs to think again over the plan which could see patients driven to Exeter rather than to Torbay Hospital for treatment. They say the extra time taken to get people from locations as far away as the most southerly tip of the county in the South Hams could put lives at risk.

Devon’s Liberal Democratic MPs have called for crucial improvements in the county’s NHS dentistry services. Speaking in the House of Commons, the Lib Dem MPs called on the county’s Integrated Care Board (ICB) to ‘up its game’. They claim there are holes in the NHS contract with dentists, issues with recruitment and retention, and problems with accessing care.

Devon is suffering a ‘digital divide’ leaving people unable to access vital services and stopping businesses from growing, it has been claimed. Speaking during a Westminster debate, South Devon’s Liberal Democrat MP Caroline Voaden said too many people in the area are being cut off by poor broadband infrastructure. And she criticised fibre broadband provider Airband, which last year scaled back an ambitious plan to boost connections across rural Devon and Somerset.

The Pavilion at Torquay has been named on a list of the 10 most endangered buildings in the country. The listing by the Victorian Society means the former theatre and ice rink where Agatha Christie was once a regular patron is ‘at real risk of being lost if action is not taken’. Torbay Council has recently taken back the lease on the building from long-term tenants MDL, and has begun a project to repair and restore the crumbling structure.
