1. IntroductionAnkylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease with a complex etiology, primarily affecting the sacroiliac joints and axial vertebrae. In most patients, back pain is an early symptom due to the localized inflammatory responses in the sacroiliac joint space and lower lumbar region. The aberrant bone fusion of sacroiliac, vertebral, and apophyseal joints often develops later, potentially causing dramatic kyphosis and spine stiffness [1].
