    Two Campbell County residents are urging Alexandria officials to pass a resolution asking the state for a large truck ban on three roads in the county. Mark Muench and Tom Ramler addressed the Alexandria City Council on June 5 regarding their concerns for safety on Kentucky Route 547, Four Mile Road and Riley Road due to tractor-trailers driving over the yellow lines. Both men are residents of Camp Springs near Melbourne.

    Newport Superintendent Tony Watts’ duties with the district will end on June 30 after he and the board of education came to an agreement on his resignation. Watts resigned as superintendent on May 15 after an over two-hour closed session meeting with the school board. At a special meeting on June 4, after speaking in a closed session, the Newport Board of Education passed a motion to sign the settlement and release agreement and covenant not to sue regarding Watts’ resignation.

    Oceans may seem far from Campbell County, but their health is tied to the water flowing through local rivers. Campbell County is celebrating World Ocean Day on June 8 by proclaiming it WAVE Water Warrior Day in recognition of the WAVE Foundation, a partner of Newport Aquarium. The WAVE Foundation is a non-profit organization that hopes to inspire environmental stewards of aquatic life through education, conservation and volunteerism.

    Texas-based homebuilders are eyeing Alexandria for a 46-lot subdivision. D.R. Horton, Inc. plans to build 46 detached single-family homes on 31 acres at 1671 Grandview Road. The Alexandria Planning Commission unanimously approved the site development plan and granted a variance for smaller lot widths on 36 of the 46 lots on June 3.  D.R. Horton has been the largest homebuilder by volume in the United States since 2002.

    The idea of a splash pad in Independence, which bloomed roughly a year ago, is still making progress. The Independence City Council provided an update on the project at its meeting on June 2. The city initially estimated $500,000 for the project in May 2024; however, the original site in Memorial Park proposed is not going to work, and the new location in the park will require site work, bringing the latest cost estimates to $1.1 million.
