Newport is introducing updated mural guidelines that welcome light-based art. The Newport Historic Preservation Commission is updating its mural guidelines in the city, including adding a section for projection-style murals. The commission approved them at a special meeting on June 18. The ordinance establishes guidelines for the approval, placement and design of murals.

ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — Plans to build 77 new single-family homes on Riley Road moved forward on Tuesday despite resident concerns over traffic, wildlife and density. Drees Homes is looking to build a subdivision on approximately 37 acres on Riley Road, north of Apple Blossom Lane in Alexandria. At a June 17 meeting, the Alexandria Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the stage one development plan. The homes are all intended to be single-family.

With Newport’s approval, the Campbell County Consolidated Dispatch Center is moving out of the city and into a public safety complex built by the county. The center is currently housed in the basement of the Newport City Building at 998 Monmouth St. The Newport Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution on June 16 allowing the dispatch center to relocate to a new facility built by the county.

The city of Newport continues to add new vehicles to its Tesla pilot program for the police department. The Newport Police Department first added three Tesla Model 3 vehicles in December 2023 and then requested two more in November 2024 after the success of the first three. In January, Newport requested the Tesla Model Y electric vehicle for use, initially in the planning, development, and code departments.
