Journalist Sewell Chan has been named senior fellow at the USC Annenberg School Center for Communication Leadership & Policy (CCLP), according to USC. This news comes after Chan was abruptly fired from the Columbia Journalism Review on April 18 following staff complaints about his behavior. Chan joined CJR as executive editor in September of last year, and has previously served as an editor at the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and most recently the Texas Tribune.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) presidential candidate Mikaela Bautista and her running mate Emma Fallon won the presidential election Tuesday night, beating out three other tickets. After disqualifications and drop-outs, all 12 remaining candidates in the senatorial election on the same ballot earned a spot on USG’s senate. The all-female team campaigned to provide opt-in ChatGPT+ accounts for all students.

On USC’s University Park campus, 226 acres of untouched red brick located almost directly between the Eaton and Palisades fires that devastated Los Angeles, the air seems fine. The first few days of the blazes left a fine coating of soot outdoors and sent air quality index numbers past 500, but now that the winds have blown that away, there’s little evidence of the nearly 50,000 acres burned or currently burning just miles away. If you squint, the landscape in the distance looks a little hazy.

A female USC student was arrested Monday morning after she struck a professor in the head with a metal water bottle during class, according to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). DPS received a call around 11 a.m. regarding an assault in room 112 of Verna and Peter Dauterive Hall, and the student was later booked for assault with a deadly weapon. A witness to the incident who asked to remain anonymous given the legal investigation underway said he believes the attack was unprovoked.
