Duke awarded three alumni with the 2024 University Medals for Distinguished Meritorious Service, Duke’s highest honor, in recognition of their longstanding impacts on the University. President Vincent Price presented the medals to Robert Califf, Trinity '73, School of Medicine '78 and House Staff '83, Fred Stanback, Trinity '50, and William Turner Jr., Pratt '70, Divinity School '74 and Graduate School '84, at the award ceremony over the Centennial Founders’ Day Weekend.

They have the potential to alter the state’s legal and social landscape. The bills imposing rollbacks on mask-wearing and juvenile court placement — H.B. 237 and H.B. 834, respectively — sparked controversy in the legislature over equity and legal concerns.

After nine years of fundraising, Duke’s Shave & Buzz club reached $1 million in total donations for young adult cancer patients in May in partnership with Durham Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE). Shave & Buzz was founded by the family and friends of Bobby Menges, a Duke student who passed away from cancer in 2017, and cancer survivor Mark Schreiber, Trinity ‘18, who beat the disease shortly afterwards.
