Shortly after he was voted into office, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described his presidential term as a “transitional” one. At the time, Tebboune, who was elected with 58 percent of votes and around 40 percent voter turnout, was trying to assuage the anger of the Hirak anti-government protests and level the ground for his eventual successor. Yet, five years later, Tebboune announced that he was running for a second term, and he is expected to win comfortably on September 7.

Since the onset of the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, there has been an array of regional and international peace initiatives aimed at ending it. Still, none have had any noticeable impact on the ground thus far. In fact, the chaotic and disjointed mediation attempts have exacerbated divisions among Sudanese civilian groups and created more room for the belligerents to forum-shop.

The first initiative to end the fighting was the so-called Jeddah platform, sponsored and facilitated by the United States and Saudi Arabia, which hosted Sudan's army and the RSF for direct talks in May. Despite the announcement of several humanitarian cease-fires through the Jeddah platform, none of them was honored by the warring factions.
