An artist whose practice is deeply tapped in her surroundings, Ser Serpas’ recipe is grounded in her native Los Angeles. When the New York-based artist finds herself back west, her comfort meal is a simple family recipe passed down by her grandmother: chile rellenos. The stuffed peppers are the first thing that comes to the artist’s mind when she lands in LA. “They are compact, light, fluffy, and made with care by my abuelita,” says Serpas.

I met Alon Schwabe and Daniel Fernández Pascual, collectively known as Cooking Sections, over a deliciously oily plate of caponata on the backstreets of Palermo, Italy, in 2018. The couple had just finished building barriers around citrus trees throughout the city from disused construction materials as part of their contribution to the 12th edition of Manifesta, the European art biennial.

In a dark room shrouded by glossy latex curtains, images are projected on a backdrop that frames two T.V.s and black rubber inner-tubes stacked like columns. The stage is set at Kurimanzutto for Alexandra Bachzetsis. Dressed in her signature denim ensemble with thigh-high red boots, Bachzetsis enters the middle of the room and interacts with a camera as if it’s a mirror. She sings, dances, and inspects herself through her digitally rendered reflection.

It’s the twilight of June, and San Francisco is in bloom: dogwood trees heavy with blossoms. Hydrangeas spill out in front of Victorians and patches of cornflowers and carnations peek out from behind fences. But dahlias might be the city’s crown jewel. Ombre and sun-spangled, the early summer sun coaxes their petals out, and sends a wash of color over Golden Gate Park and into city yards.
