Victim in Thursday’s fatal pedestrian accident was Bethel resident

BETHEL – State Police have identified the victim of a fatal accident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed early Thursday morning in the Town of Bethel. Police said Brett Stevens, 30, of Bethel, was walking in the lane on Route 17B in the area of Happy Avenue at about 5:45 a.m. when he was struck and killed by a 2022 International Harvester tractor-trailer driven by 64-year-old Anthony Lee Tyson of Waterbury, Connecticut. The investigation is continuing.
NFA teacher assaulted by student

NEWBURGH – A teacher at NFA Main experienced “a mental health episode during which a teacher was assaulted in their classroom,” Acting Superintendent Dr. Lisa Buon said. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 7, and is believed to have involved a female teacher who was treated at the hospital emergency room. In a letter to the school community, Buon said the school immediately contacted the Newburgh City Police Department and local Emergency Response Services to assist the teacher.
Large hotel planned for downtown Middletown

MIDDLETOWN – The first hotel in the City of Middletown is going to be created in the not-too-distant future. Pureland Hospitality, with offices in the Town of Wallkill, is planning to redevelop the massive former Classy Leather building on Canal Street into a 100-room Hilton brand hotel. Company President Jim Zhang told Mid-Hudson News on Thursday that the long-vacant structure will be reimagined into a modern venue. “We plan to convert it into a Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
Even-year elections upheld

ALBANY – The Appellate Division of State Supreme Court has upheld even-year elections and the legislation’s sponsor, Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) says the unanimous decision overturned “a politically-motivated lower court ruling.”Skoufis said the ruling is a win for voters and fosters a more inclusive and more representative democracy.
Northwell Health officially merges with Nuvance Health

MID-HUDSON – It’s a done deal, Northwell Health and Nuvance Health have formally merged combining health care facilities in the Hudson Valley with those in Connecticut. The new system, to be known as Northwell Health, includes the Nuvance’s Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel and Danbury Hospital.
Police release names of victims in fatal Woodbury crash

WOODBURY – State Police have released the name of the person killed in a head-on crash on Route 6 in the Town of Woodbury at about 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday as Samantha Lezin, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the preliminary investigation determined that a 2023 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck, driven by Noely Rafael Vargas, was traveling eastbound on Route 6 when it crossed over the double yellow line and struck a westbound 2016 Honda Civic CRX head on. Lezin was driving that vehicle.
State DOT brings proposed Rt. 17 upgrades to Chester area session

CHESTER – The State Department of Transportation continues to work up proposals to upgrade New York Route 17 in Orange County as it transitions to Interstate 86. On Tuesday, officials brought their ideas to a Chester open house for residents to review them and make their own recommendations. DOT spokeswoman Heather Pilsworth noted the state’s proposals are not carved in stone, but can be viewed as a starting point to gain local input.
DoorDash ‘devastated’ by shooting of deliveryman

NEW YORK – DoorDash is “devastated” by the shooting of one of their deliverymen in the Town of Chester. Chester Town Highway Superintendent John Reilly is accused of shooting at and wounding the DoorDash driver attempting to make delivery to a residence on Valerie Drive. He apparently got lost in Chester at about 9 p.m., approached several homes, including Reilly’s, asking for directions.
Sullivan County implements security plan

MONTICELLO – Sullivan County government infrastructure is being hardened with the first phase of an infrastructure security plan. Scott Schulte, commissioner of Emergency Management, said the plan is being put into operation now. “It will include some on-site security measures as well as some staffing that is going to focus on wayfinding and greeting for visitors as well as general occupancy safety,” he said. “I think that is going to go a long way.
Newburgh City Police force leads in sworn female officers

NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh Police Department is a leader in growing the female ranks of its sworn officers. City Manager Todd Venning said the statistics are borne out by the state. “According to the State Division of Criminal Justice Services, the City of Newburgh is now a statewide leader in hiring women police officers. Currently 22 percent of sworn personnel in our PD are women compared to the 16 percent statewide.
