BETHEL – State Police have identified the victim of a fatal accident in which a pedestrian was struck and killed early Thursday morning in the Town of Bethel. Police said Brett Stevens, 30, of Bethel, was walking in the lane on Route 17B in the area of Happy Avenue at about 5:45 a.m. when he was struck and killed by a 2022 International Harvester tractor-trailer driven by 64-year-old Anthony Lee Tyson of Waterbury, Connecticut. The investigation is continuing.

POUGHKEEPSIE – The jury in the murder trial of Jan Michael Deere, 37, and Joseph Gonzalez, 45, ended in a mistrial Friday afternoon after the jury indicated they were deadlocked. The two men were on trial for the 2024 murder of Jaquan Fryar on Main Street in Poughkeepsie. Deere was the defendant who fired the shot that struck Fryar in the head after Fryar had attacked Gonzalez in an illegal bar. Fryar left after the initial attack and returned a short time later.

NEWBURGH – A teacher at NFA Main experienced “a mental health episode during which a teacher was assaulted in their classroom,” Acting Superintendent Dr. Lisa Buon said. The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 7, and is believed to have involved a female teacher who was treated at the hospital emergency room. In a letter to the school community, Buon said the school immediately contacted the Newburgh City Police Department and local Emergency Response Services to assist the teacher.

MIDDLETOWN – The first hotel in the City of Middletown is going to be created in the not-too-distant future. Pureland Hospitality, with offices in the Town of Wallkill, is planning to redevelop the massive former Classy Leather building on Canal Street into a 100-room Hilton brand hotel. Company President Jim Zhang told Mid-Hudson News on Thursday that the long-vacant structure will be reimagined into a modern venue. “We plan to convert it into a Tapestry Collection by Hilton.
