State Bound: Local Athletes Set to Compete at the OHSAA Track & Field Championships

The best of the area will put everything on the line this weekend at the annual state track and field meet. The event kicks off Friday at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at the Ohio State University. Action kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with the girls’ and boys’ 3200 relay in Division III. The last event Friday is the boys’ 1600 relay at 7:25. Racing resumes Saturday with the girls, then boys 300 hurdles. The final event Saturday is the Division I 1600 relay scheduled for 6:50.
Pushing the Limits: County Athletes Smash Records at the Classic

Track and field athletes from around the county put on a real show at Woody Hayes Quaker Stadium in New Philadelphia Thursday night. When all was said and done, seven new meet records were established at the annual Tuscarawas County Classic. In three cases, breaking the old meet record wasn’t enough to win. Take the girls’ 400 relay race for example.

After winning the ABO championship, Andre “Sugar Dre” Donovan returned to his Uhrichsville home and spent approximately four hours watching the fight he’d just won. Then he went to bed. Just not alone … he took his new title belt with him. Last Saturday, Donovan spent the evening at the Hollywood Casino in Washington, Pa., where he stopped veteran fighter Jesus Martinez in the third round of a scheduled eight-round fight to win the Appalachian Boxing Organization’s Bantamweight Championship.
Fairless’ Collin Sullivan Makes History with State Wrestling Title Win

Fairless senior Collin Sullivan had a long day, but he made the most of it. After qualifying for the state finals Saturday evening, Sullivan had to wait for the final matches Sunday night to get his shot at a state title. He didn’t waste it. Sullivan won the first state wrestling title in school history, claiming the Division III individual 285-pound title with a 7-3 win over Christopher Timms of Indian Lake. Sullivan wrapped up the season with a 47-4 record.
Area Wrestlers Ready to Battle for Glory at State Tournament in Columbus

A number of high school wrestlers from the area will put it all on the line when they head to the state wrestling tournament this weekend in Columbus. Garaway leads the area with five qualifiers in the Division III contest, while Claymont, Indian Valley, Tusky Valley and West Holmes have three each. Wrestling kicks off at the Schottenstein Center Friday at 1 with the preliminaries and a consolation round.

Area high school wrestlers took their first steps into the second season this weekend while taking part in various sectional wrestling tournaments. In all cases, the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next weekend’s district tournaments where they will face the challenge of earning a berth in the state tournament. Here’s a rundown on who advanced: Dover and New Philadelphia took part in separate Division I tournaments in the Northeast District.

Claymont advanced nine wrestlers to the finals and finished with three champions in taking the team title at the Inter-Valley Conference wrestling tournament Thursday night at Uhrichsville. The Mustangs finished with 218 points to win the title, while Indian Valley was second with 190. Garaway (172) finished third, followed by Ridgewood (81), Sandy Valley (80), Malvern (45), Tusky Valley (37), Newcomerstown (15) and Conotton Valley (4).

Cheerleaders from throughout the Inter-Valley Conference gathered in Gnadenhutten last weekend to celebrate. Celebrate what, you ask? Cheerleading. The squads gathered at Indian Valley High Saturday morning for the 6th annual Inter-Valley Conference Cheerleading Championships. Competitions were held in both Middle School and High School divisions for squads throughout the conference. Indian Valley won the championship in the South Division, with Tusky Valley taking second.

The Claymont wrestling team is on a roll. The Mustangs picked up a pair of wins against area teams in the past week. On Friday, Claymont knocked off visiting Indian Valley 53-22 and then traveled to New Philadelphia on Wednesday, coming home with a 62-18 win over the Quakers. The victories move the Mustangs to 16-2 with just over a month left in the regular season. Claymont dominated both contests.

When the postgame discussions were complete, Indian Valley senior Jaxon Burcher stood in the interview room, clutching the Division IV state championship trophy. He said he wasn’t planning to let go. “They’re going to have to make another one, I’m not giving this back,” he joked. Burcher did, indeed, let go of the trophy, handing it to teammates as they all celebrated at a post-midnight community celebration at Brotherhood HVAC Stadium in Gnadenhutten.
