    Fairless senior Collin Sullivan had a long day, but he made the most of it. After qualifying for the state finals Saturday evening, Sullivan had to wait for the final matches Sunday night to get his shot at a state title. He didn’t waste it. Sullivan won the first state wrestling title in school history, claiming the Division III individual 285-pound title with a 7-3 win over Christopher Timms of Indian Lake. Sullivan wrapped up the season with a 47-4 record.

    A number of high school wrestlers from the area will put it all on the line when they head to the state wrestling tournament this weekend in Columbus. Garaway leads the area with five qualifiers in the Division III contest, while Claymont, Indian Valley, Tusky Valley and West Holmes have three each. Wrestling kicks off at the Schottenstein Center Friday at 1 with the preliminaries and a consolation round.

    Area high school wrestlers took their first steps into the second season this weekend while taking part in various sectional wrestling tournaments. In all cases, the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next weekend’s district tournaments where they will face the challenge of earning a berth in the state tournament. Here’s a rundown on who advanced: Dover and New Philadelphia took part in separate Division I tournaments in the Northeast District.

    Claymont advanced nine wrestlers to the finals and finished with three champions in taking the team title at the Inter-Valley Conference wrestling tournament Thursday night at Uhrichsville. The Mustangs finished with 218 points to win the title, while Indian Valley was second with 190. Garaway (172) finished third, followed by Ridgewood (81), Sandy Valley (80), Malvern (45), Tusky Valley (37), Newcomerstown (15) and Conotton Valley (4).

    Cheerleaders from throughout the Inter-Valley Conference gathered in Gnadenhutten last weekend to celebrate. Celebrate what, you ask? Cheerleading. The squads gathered at Indian Valley High Saturday morning for the 6th annual Inter-Valley Conference Cheerleading Championships. Competitions were held in both Middle School and High School divisions for squads throughout the conference. Indian Valley won the championship in the South Division, with Tusky Valley taking second.
