Keri Heintzeman—a well-established Republican activist in the Brainerd Lakes Area and wife of state Rep. Josh Heintzeman—ran away with the win in a northern Minnesota special primary election on Tuesday. Heintzeman secured the GOP nomination for the Senate District 6 general election later this month after garnering 47% of the vote among a field of eight candidates, according to unofficial returns reported to the Minnesota Secretary of State.

A Republican stronghold in north-central Minnesota is set to hold its Senate District 6 primary on Tuesday. And while the eight candidates on that ballot are seeking to be the Republican nominee for the now-vacant seat in the April 29 general election—one of those candidates, Angel Zierden, has taken some heat recently for supporting a Democratic candidate last November. And she hasn’t shied away from criticism when asked about it.

Arsema Mesfun told a room full of legislators at the Minnesota Capitol on Wednesday that when she finishes high school four years from now she intends to enroll in college and study nursing. Mesfun’s parents are first-generation immigrants whom she described as middle class. Her mother works as a custodian for Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis. “So maybe one day my mom will work with me” at the hospital, said Mesfun, an eighth-grader at St. John Paul II Catholic School in Minneapolis.
