Nearly a quarter of U.S. adults reported living with chronic pain in 2023, according to a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Just over 24 percent (24.3 percent) of survey respondents said they experienced chronic pain either most days or every day, the CDC said, and nearly 9 percent of adults had "high-impact chronic pain" in the previous three months, meaning their pain frequently limited their life or work activities.

Downtime This is One Thing, a column with tips on how to live. For the past month, as the weather has gotten colder, I’ve had a routine I do each night. I’ll put a bit of water in my kettle to make some hot water for tea. Then I’ll fill the kettle again, all the way to the top, to heat water for my hot-water bottle. I use the water bottle way more than I ever could have ever imagined. I bought it on a whim when I was looking for ice packs to help with my shin splints.

Researchers estimate that 123,000 to 193,000 U.S. adults were hospitalized each year with respiratory syncytial virus from the 2016-17 RSV season through the 2022-23 season, according to a new analysis of cases. The study, published in JAMA Network Open, looked at data from the RSV Hospitalization Surveillance Network. The survey drew on data from 58 counties across 12 states, covering about 8% of the U.S. population.
