The gyms are run by City Champs, a Milwaukee-based nonprofit that seeks to transform the lives of Milwaukee youths through free martial arts classes.

X For 36 years, Dolly Grimes-Johnson (Miss Dolly) served as the Shelter Director at Sojourner Family Peace Center. Over the years, she provided care and guidance to shelter residents and assisted an estimated 25,000 women in pursuing safety and independence from domestic violence. Even in her retirement, Grimes-Johnson continues to advocate for abused women and children.

Almost two years ago, OnMilwaukee reported on Emma Larson who was committed to weekly clean-ups of Holton Street, a bustling thoroughfare in the Riverwest neighborhood. This Saturday morning, Larson will conduct her 100th clean up. Larson picks up about two garbage bags a week of trash in the spring and summer and one bag in fall and winter. Many Saturdays she is assisted by her husband, Khurram, and sometimes wears her infant son in a carrier. Her parents also frequently help out.

Driven by a personal tragedy and a vow to help combat violence in the community, Nigel Harvey founded a basketball league with a mission that goes beyond the court. Harvey is the founder and commissioner of Cream Skills Inc., also known as the Cream Skills Basketball Association, which is one of the city’s largest summer basketball leagues. The league has returned for its eighth season with a new home: Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Downtown campus.
