The American Theatre Wings's Tony Awards celebrate the best of Broadway shows. This year, the winners of the 78th Tony Awards recognizing excellence during the 2024-25 season, will be announced on June 8, at a ceremony hosted by Cynthia Erivo at Radio City Music Hall. The show will air live on CBS. Over all, Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending, and Buena Vista Social Club, led the nominations with ten each.

The nominations for New York's professional theatre Drama Desk Awards have been announced. In the design categories, there were no clear leaders with many shows getting multiple nominations including Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Glass. Kill. What If If Only. Imp., Sunset Blvd., Just In Time, and Boop! The Musical which each got three noms for designers. The leader in all categories is Boop! The Musical, with 11 nominations in total.

Dimension Studio, a British company specializing in mixed reality and realtime production services, recently held an interesting demo at OUTERNET London. Well known for its work in virtual production for film and TV including Wicked, Time Bandits, and TV and a regular partnership with Cinecittà in Rome, the company was demonstrating its new live event technology. The brand has launched a new division, Dimension Live, to bring its expertise in virtual production for the film world into live events.

On April 9, lighting and production designer Patrick Woodroffe took to the main stage at Pro Light + Sound to deliver a presentation on The Politics of Failure. Ironically, at the beginning of his talk, his slide show suffered a technical failure and the man who has created some of the most memorable live images, from The Rolling Stones to Lady Gaga, was forced to continue with a blank backdrop.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees for Britain's Laurence Olivier Awards, held on 6 April, 2025, at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Lighting designer Paule Constable officially became the most honored person in Olivier Awards history with 17 nominations, this year winning her sixth award, (in collaboration with Ben Jacobs,) for the musical Oliver! at the Gielgud Theatre. It is a fitting end to a storied career for Constable, who will be retiring from new theatre projects this summer.

Set on a steam ship, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s latest version of Hamlet manages to feel both claustrophobic, trapping the protagonists onboard, but also exposed, as they navigate a shifting deck in treacherous waters without a safety rail. The sea, projected around the stage by video designer Akhila Krishnan, is at first a steady wake lit by moonlight as the ship of state steams smoothly along its path.

Paule Constable, the Tony and Olivier Award winning lighting and production designer, shared her plot for the National Theatre's production of Ballet Shoes. The Olivier Theatre, where Ballet Shoes is playing, was formerly a repertory house with a set of gear that can be moved around as needed for a particular show.
