The tornado that tore through Rolla on March 14 snapped power lines like matchsticks, leaving around 8,000 homes and businesses without electricity, according to the Phelps County Focus. Among the affected areas was the local meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located on Forum Drive, near the middle school that was severely damaged. For more than two weeks the power was out, suspending in-person services.

Concerned citizens are the backbone of a compassionate society, and volunteers are at its heart. In Rolla, a youth group of teenage girls and their leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered as volunteers to benefit local survivors of domestic/sexual violence. Their service project included assembling 42 “survivor bags” to be donated to the Russell House.

Princeton professor and climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer didn’t always see partnering with fossil fuel companies to do climate research as a giant red flag. But he eventually came to view those relationships as a conflict of interest and cut ties with industry. Between 2010 and 2020, the fossil fuel industry funded $700 million worth of energy research on U.S. campuses. At Princeton last year, the funding of research by oil and gas companies increased by 15 percent to more than $4 million.
