Publisher Donald Dodd, who leads Salem Publishing Company, Inc., has been part of the newspaper industry since 1980 and has always appreciated the ambition and achievements of Phelps County and its neighboring towns, including Rolla, St. James, Edgar Springs, Doolittle, and Newburg.     Missouri House Republicans unexpectedly refused to allow a vote Friday on a $513 million spending bill for construction projects, citing a desire to control spending for a move that was kept secret from Democrats in the chamber and members of the state Senate. The move sank funding for major projects around the state, including national guard facilities, Boys and Girls clubs, and community health centers, to name a few. And it could seriously damage relations within the House and between chambers.

    Work at school buildings damaged by the March tornado is continuing and progressing, the Rolla Board of Education heard at its meeting May 5. Some students are in classrooms in other buildings, even off-campus buildings, and they’ll continue to the end of this school year in just a few days. But Dr. Monica Fulton, assistant superintendent, said the work is progressing so well that, barring any unforeseen events, students will be back in the correct buildings in August.

    Board members, volunteers, supporters, exhibitors and fans always look forward to Phelps County Fair, and this year that event – “the social event of the season” for some of us – will be held May 29-31. Board President Stacy Yoakum told Phelps County Focus it will be just like the August fair with one exception. “There’ll be no market animals and no sale,” he said. Instead, there will be a market livestock show and sale later this year, probably around the traditional time of the fair.

    For the fourth consecutive year the Rolla High School boys’ tennis squad has advanced as a doubles team to the Missouri Individual State Tournament. The doubles team of seniors Keaton Renaud and Joe Foster took first place in the Missouri Class 2 District 6 Individual Tournament, held Friday, May 2 at the Gillenwater Tennis Complex in Springfield. Foster, sidelined most of the season with a stress fracture in his foot, has only been playing the past two weeks.

    The Rolla High boys’ golf squad posted a 292-377 dual meet victory over the Waynesville Tigers Friday, May 2 at Oak Meadow Country Club. Senior Easton Brown was the meet medalist, shooting two-over-par 72. Also for RHS, freshman Canter Bahr and sophomore Dawson Caldwell each shot 73; junior Chancen Jordan shot 74, and senior Chayton Jordan 75. The Bulldog junior varsity team shot 362.
