AbstractHerbivorous insects alter biogeochemical cycling within forests, but the magnitude of these impacts, their global variation, and drivers of this variation remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap and help improve biogeochemical models, we established a global network of 74 plots within 40 mature, undisturbed broadleaved forests.

Introduction A rise in vapour pressure deficit (VPD) has become evident in recent decades, due to a significant increase in surface temperature, while surface relative humidity (RH) has declined at the global scale (Vicente-Serrano et al., 2018; IPCC, 2021). Plants sense variations in VPD, defined as the difference between the saturation and actual water vapour pressure, through the leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (LAVPD).
