Introduction A rise in vapour pressure deficit (VPD) has become evident in recent decades, due to a significant increase in surface temperature, while surface relative humidity (RH) has declined at the global scale (Vicente-Serrano et al., 2018; IPCC, 2021). Plants sense variations in VPD, defined as the difference between the saturation and actual water vapour pressure, through the leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (LAVPD).

AbstractThe vapor pressure deficit reflects the difference between how much moisture the atmosphere could and actually does hold, a factor that fundamentally affects evapotranspiration, ecosystem functioning, and vegetation carbon uptake. Its spatial variability and long-term trends under natural versus human-influenced climate are poorly known despite being essential for predicting future effects on natural ecosystems and human societies such as crop yield, wildfires, and health.

Smith In recent decades, visual identification of flood rings (event years) has been successfully used to document historic high-magnitude spring floods. In Fraxinus spp., flood rings usually have more numerous earlywood vessels and/or earlywood vessels with smaller cross-sectional area than observed in "normal" years. Visual identification of flood rings has also shown to be reproductible.
