Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) resulting in aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common form of valvular heart disease, affecting 2% of those over age 65. Those who develop symptomatic severe AS have an average further lifespan of <2 years without valve replacement, and three-quarters of these patients will develop heart failure, undergo valve replacement, or die within 5 years.

As patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) live longer, non-congenital cardiologists and other healthcare professionals are increasingly confronted with this growing population. However, training regarding this pathology is generally lacking. The lifelong burden of adult CHD (ACHD) care arises from the original nature of the congenital heart defect, complications prior to interventions, consequences of previous interventions, periprocedural complications, and residual lesions.

Most under- and post-graduate medical training tends to overlook this common pathology, resulting in insufficient awareness of post-repair or post-palliation residual lesions and sequelae from previous interventions.
