RENSSELAER - The Rensselaer City Council voted to retain the services of Emily Lyons as a member of the Rensselaer Central School Board on Tuesday night. It is the second four-year term for Lyons, whose new term begins July 1. She was among two candidates for the job, said council president Noelle Weishaar. Both were interviewed in a public hearing by the council last week.

RENSSELAER - Sanjib "Shorty" Mohanty and Good Oil of Winamac have devised a way to help provide funds for Saint Joseph's College's Building and Trades program. Shorty's BP station Washington Street in downtown Rensselaer has designated a pump that when used by customers, Good Oil and the station will give 5 cents for each gallon of gas to the program, which is currently building homes on the west side of campus.

RENSSELAER - Cindy Stath of Rensselaer - who is affectionally known by many as the Wreath Lady - delivered a Memorial Day message designed to stress the importance of remembering our nation's fallen soldiers on a day set aside specifically for them during Monday's Memorial Day service at the Weston Cemetery. "For many, (Memorial Day) marks the beginning of the summer, parades, cookouts and swimming pool and backyard parties.

JASPER COUNTY - Jasper County properties will be receiving new roofs and shingles this summer. The Jasper County Commissioners approved bids on a series of roofing projects involving county buildings, including the Health Department where the board meets the first Monday of every month. The building is located at 910 S. Sparling Ave. in Rensselaer. The county received two bids to replace the roof, with FBI Buildings bid of $107,640 for a standing seam metal roof accepted by the commissioners.

WHEATFIELD - Wheatfield American Legion Post 406 members led a large contingent of Legionnaires, Legion Auxiliary members and the Legion Riders in a Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 26. The group gathered at the Integrity Funeral Home parking lot on South Street before making the 250-foot trek to the top of the hill at Wheatfield Cemetery. Over 30 people gathered at the top of the hill to witness the parade, which also included members from a Boy Scout troop.
