    JASPER COUNTY - Three members of the Jasper County Sheriff's Department were recognized for life-saving efforts during a ceremony at the county jail on April 30. Sergeant Eric Roosma and deputies Michael Vega and Brett Fase were presented awards for their heroic actions in providing first aid and applying a tourniquet to an accident victim this spring. According to medical personnel, their efforts most likely save the individual's life.

    MONTICELLO - Rensselaer Central finished 1-1 during its appearance in the annual Twin Lakes softball invitational on Saturday, May 10. The Bombers (10-7) lost a heartbreaker to Pioneer by a 6-5 final and handed Benton Central a 13-2 loss later in the day. In game one, RCHS tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth inning, but Pioneer (13-8) scored the game-winner in its last at-bat. Hollie Sellers was 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI for the Panthers.

    WEST LAFAYETTE - Senior thrower Bryan Camarena, sophomore jumper Braylon Mullins and sophomore sprinter Rashad Claybon earned all-Hoosier Conference status for their performances during the league's track and field meet at West Lafayette last Friday, May 9. Camarena defended his discus title with a toss of 172 feet, 11 inches. Teammate Logan Metzger was second at 133-11 to earn all-HC honorable mention honors. Claybon, meanwhile, defended his 100-meter dash title in a time of 11.16 seconds.

    LOWELL - Kankakee Valley got solid pitching performances from Alex Barr and Jake Fitzpatrick in its 8-1 Northwest Crossroads Conference rout of host Lowell on Monday (May 12). It was the first league win of the season for the Kougars, who improve to 1-9 in the NCC. Barr and Fitzpatrick combined for a one-hitter, with Barr going four hitless innings. He struck out eight and walked seven and allowed the one run, though it was unearned.
