It was a snide allusion to the charge of seditious conspiracy he had faced at a high-profile trial in Fort Smith, Arkansas, that year. On Jan. 6, 2021, I was one of the police officers sworn to defend the U.S. Capitol when a mob, incited by a sitting president, attacked democracy itself. Then-President Donald Trump goaded his followers to march on Congress and stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory, and a rabid mob overran Congress in a violent attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. My fellow officers and I saw the worst of America that day.
