    On Jan. 6, 2021, I was one of the police officers sworn to defend the U.S. Capitol when a mob, incited by a sitting president, attacked democracy itself. Then-President Donald Trump goaded his followers to march on Congress and stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory, and a rabid mob overran Congress in a violent attempt to overturn the results of a free and fair election. My fellow officers and I saw the worst of America that day.

    I was in the chamber of the House of Representatives when it was attacked on Jan. 6, 2021, by people who so fervently believed the lie that the election had been stolen that they were willing to break windows, attack law enforcement and demand the hanging of their own vice president. Years later, the images of that brutality – shattered glass and bloodstained floors, young policemen trapped and beaten by a frenzied lynch mob – remain vivid in my mind.
