Sometimes picking a Player of the Year is easy. One individual stands alone in their dominance over the rest. Sometimes, however, narrowing the list down still results in four or five worthy candidates. That was the case with the 2025 Herald-News Girls Soccer Player of the Year. The list of players deserving of the honor was quite lengthy. Plainfield North sophomore Ilyana Barriball scored 33 goals, most in the area for a 3A team.

Albuquerque Isotopes manager Pedro Lopez walked up to Ryan Ritter following a Triple-A game in El Paso with a letter in his hand. It was the call Ritter had dreamed about, but did not expect at the time. Ritter, a Lincoln-Way East alum, had twice been named Pacific Coast League Player of the Week in May. When Lopez told Ritter the letter was from the PCL, the 24-year old assumed he’d been named Player of the Month.

PEORIA – Only eight softball teams can end their season with a victory: The four who win the state title game, and the four who win the third-place game. Lockport hoped to be in the latter group on Saturday at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex with a Class 4A third-place game victory over Oak Park-River Forest. Unfortunately for the Porters, the Huskies ended the season on a happy note. Trailing by three runs entering the sixth inning, OPRF exploded to pull ahead and hold on for the 6-5 win.

The high school softball season is almost over, so it’s time to take a look at the all-conference selections from around the area. Let’s start with a team that’s still competing. Providence Catholic had four players chosen to the All-Girls Catholic Athletic Conference team. Angelina Cole, a Western Michigan signee, led the way along with superstar freshman Macie Robbins. Just sent in gamer on Lockport's third place softball game. With that, it's a wrap on year eight of this whole sports reporting thing! It was a good one :)

Former Joliet West star @jeremiahfears2 potentially going to my team????? Okayyyyyy.

Things I'm hearing regarding the Pelicans from NBA sources: 1. They LOVE Univ. of Oklahoma PG Jeremiah Fears. Just 18 years old, does he get to No. 7 when NOLA picks? 2. LOTS of teams calling about Trey Murphy III, including the Spurs. FWIW, I can't imagine he gets traded! https://t.co/KtwPzNgJDu

FINAL: 6-5. OPRF wins. Lockport ends the year in fourth place
