Last year, Lincoln-Way West had one of the best baseball teams in the state. The Warriors advanced to the sectional finals where they ultimately lost to the eventual state champion Providence Catholic Celtics. Still, they finished with the Herald-News Player of the Year (Conor Essenburg) and plenty of hope for the future. Fast forward to 2025. The future is now, and man is it bright. The Warriors have opened up the season with an 11-game win streak and are outscoring opponents 131-28.

JOLIET – Things couldn’t have been going much different for the Joliet West and Providence softball teams. Entering Friday, the Tigers had lost their first nine games of the season while the Celtics were 6-3 and on a two-game winning streak. Yet when the final out was called in Friday’s game, the Tigers were celebrating something they hadn’t felt in almost a year: victory.

JOLIET – It’s a new era for the Bolingbrook baseball team as new coach Craig Dixon is overseeing the program now. He brings more than two decades of coaching experience, though this is his first year as a high school head coach. The results have been up and down early. The Raiders opened the season with three straight losses, but they’re 3-1-1 since then after beating Joliet Central 6-2 on Thursday.

Providence Catholic is the defending 4A state champion in baseball. Anyone who follows prep baseball is already aware of that. People may not realize, though, that the overwhelming majority of their roster from last year is back. That would likely explain the 6-1 start. It might also explain how the Celtics just won the WJOL Tournament last weekend for a record sixth time.

PLAINFIELD – 2024 was a rough year for the Plainfield co-op girls lacrosse team. Fifteen contests, 15 defeats with its closest result being a nine-goal loss. This spring hasn’t been much kinder so far, as Wednesday’s 20-6 loss to Sandburg dropped the Cheetahs to 0-3 on the season. Still, ask anyone on the roster or the coaching staff, and one will hear only positive things about the team. “Our biggest message is positivity,” coach Ashley Hornig said.
