As a belated present, Providence Catholic softball coach Jim Holba sent the freshman into the circle for the Class 3A Providence Regional championship game against Marian Catholic on Saturday morning. Then, Robbins celebrated her birthday weekend with her teammates by actually giving them, and Holba, a gift herself: A gem of a pitching performance and regional championship.

JOLIET -The first time Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way Central faced off this season in girls soccer, the result was a win for the Griffins. When they played each other Friday, though, it was for the Class 3A Joliet West Sectional title. With stakes that high between two conference and Lincoln-Way rivals, anything could happen. For the first 40 minutes, it was a totally different game from the fist time they met. When the clock hit zero, however, it was the exact same result.

PLAINFIELD -- Playoff seeding rarely tells the full story. While a higher ranked team may often be considered the favorite, you can never count the underdog out. That was evident in the Class 4A Plainfield North Regional semifinal game Wednesday between Plainfield North and Hinsdale Central. The 13th seeded Red Devils gave the fourth seeded Tigers one heck of a fight for three innings. Then, Plainfield North showed why it was given the fourth seed.

JOLIET -- The first time Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way West met on the girls soccer pitch this season, the Griffins came away with a convincing 5-0 victory. The second time, Lincoln-Way East was again dominant, winning 6-0. The third time the two faced off was Tuesday in the Class 3A Joliet West Sectional semifinals. Nothing comes easy in the playoffs, as people say. Those same people say it’s not easy to beat a team three times in a season.

Monday, May 26Plainfield South 2, Pekin 0: The eighth-seeded Cougars knocked off 10th-seeded Pekin in the Class 4A Normal Community West Regional quarterfinals. Pablo Herrera struck out 13 while only allowing one hit for Plainfield South. Plainfield East 6, Bolingbrook 2: The 16th-seeded Bengals beat the 17th-seeded Raiders in the Class 4A Yorkville Regional quarterfinals.
