Years ago, I worked in a restaurant that served Grand Marnier mousse in fancy crystal dishes, topped with a tiny butter cookie. Light, orangey, and delicious, it was one of my favourite desserts next to the strawberry pie. A few weeks ago when I found dark chocolate cups in the grocery store, all I could think of was filling them with that mousse. For the longest time I was never that fond of chocolate and orange flavours together, but in recent years I've grown to love them.

When our children are young, we have so much control. We control when they go to bed, we choose their food, even when they do their homework. This summer, I learned why I need to pay more attention to the ingredients in the products I put on my baby’s skin. When we packed up to go on vacation this summer, to reduce the piles of baby paraphernalia we bring with us, we decided to pick up diapers and wipes on the way to the cottage. I hand a black Sharpie to my eight and ten-year-old and say, “Alright, draw your pumpkin’s face,” and then turn to the pan of pumpkin pulp on the table and begin separating the seeds to be roasted. I don’t hover over them as they draw or give them tips and suggestions. I don’t even glance in their direction. I don’t care one iota what their pumpkins end up looking like. I don’t care if the eyes are uneven or the mouth is too small, or there are Sharpie lines visible all over the orange skin.

“We’ve booked you a room for the weekend,” my mom emailed me. My husband and I were under insurmountable stress at that moment in time, and my parents had decided to gift us with a weekend away at a hotel – half an hour from our house. At first, I didn’t understand. A break from our then three- and eight-year-olds certainly would be lovely, but they gave us that regularly by taking the kids to their house for the weekend.
