This farro salad was inspired by a trip to Portland, Oregon years ago. Portland is a great food city, and often, when visiting, I liked to stay downtown for two key reasons: proximity to Powell’s Books and meals at Clyde Common, a fantastic bar and restaurant on the ground floor of the Ace Hotel. On one trip I enjoyed a farro salad on repeat throughout my visit. It was plump whole grains plus shaved vegetables tossed with an herb-flecked buttermilk dressing.

These braised artichokes, pulled straight from the oven, are golden, tender, and fantastically tasty. Artichoke hearts are baked for an hour, covered in an unctuous slathering of olive oil, white wine, olives, mint, garlic and orange zest. Types of Artichokes to UseDepending on your level of ambition, you can choose which type of artichokes to use for this recipe with a few little adjustments.

This chocolate pie has some legit hippie vibes, but only if you fixate on the ingredient list. Slide this onto the dessert table at a party, people are likely going to think it’s a creamy, chocolate mousse pie situation, but there’s more to the story here. It comes from a wildly popular back-to-the-land compilation book I picked up in the 2000s.

This is a noodle salad you'll crave every day. A radiant, color-flecked tangle of noodles, cabbage, shredded carrots, pickled sushi ginger, and an abundance of cilantro, basil, and scallions. It has tofu and peanuts, coconut, ginger, avocado, and hemp seeds. The dressing(!) - it's simple but strong, and steps in with an assertive spicy sriracha-lime punch. This is one of those near-perfect one dish meals.

We have family visiting from out of town this week, and this twist on a favorite Suzanne Goin Potato Gratin is top of the menu. It's a bit of a project, but worth it if you have the time and are in the mood for a slicey-dicey sort of afternoon in the kitchen. Potato Gratin with Tomatoes and Spices: The InspirationOne of the things I like about Suzanne's gratin is the way she strikes bright, flavorful, deep and rustic notes in a preparation that isn't overly decadent.
