We have family visiting from out of town this week, and this twist on a favorite Suzanne Goin Potato Gratin is top of the menu. It's a bit of a project, but worth it if you have the time and are in the mood for a slicey-dicey sort of afternoon in the kitchen. Potato Gratin with Tomatoes and Spices: The InspirationOne of the things I like about Suzanne's gratin is the way she strikes bright, flavorful, deep and rustic notes in a preparation that isn't overly decadent.

Welcome! I'm Heidi – This site celebrates cooking, and aspires to help you integrate the power of lots of vegetables and whole foods into your everyday meals. The recipes you 'll find here are vegetarian, often vegan, written with the home cook in mind. This site has been my online “home base” for nearly twenty years. It was initially built on the premise that when you own over 100 cookbooks (raises hand!), it is time to stop buying, and start cooking.

Fresh pasta is a lot less time-intensive than you might think, and fantastically worth the effort. PiciPici is one of the most charming pasta shapes.

This spicy cauliflower is something special. Imagine a skillet of caramelized onions cooked down with fragrant cumin, ginger, garlic, sesame seeds and chiles. Add cauliflower and cook until tender. Vibrant, spicy, sweet earthiness cooked in a single skillet, served on one plate. Spicy Cauliflower with Sesame: The InspirationThe inspiration for the recipe comes from Reza Mahammad's lovely cookbook, Rice, Spice and all Things Nice.

This one is for my sister - a lifelong sunflower seed enthusiast. I flipped to page 205 of Marisa McClellan's book, Food in Jars, and there it was - a recipe for homemade Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Seed Butter. Here's the thing, if you have sunflower seeds, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla bean paste (or pods), you can make it right now. It takes next to no time. As I'm sure you can imagine, it's perfect on good toast.
