It was a scene that I've never seen in my lifetime and, yes, I cried (again). The moment the Newcastle United parade bus appeared at the top of the Gallowgate, and the roar that greeted it, was something I'll never forget. Fans had lined the streets for hours before the 4.30pm bus parade journey from St James' Park started. By 3.30pm, Percy Street was ten rows deep with fans and a sea of black and white was gathered at the end of Blackett Street and around the corner of Gallowgate.

Newcastle United have won the Carabao Cup at Wembley. I can’t believe I’m typing those words, and can assure readers that I didn’t pre-plan this editorial. We’d never tempt fate with something so important for the city and for all of us at the Chronicle, which has been reporting on Newcastle United since its very first game. So, I’m writing this at 8pm on Sunday night, and still shaking. The narrative has finally changed - Newcastle United DO win trophies, and we are so very proud of them.
