Darkness Into Light (DIL), the annual fundraising event which raises vital funds for local mental health charities in Northern Ireland, is back for 2025. Organised by Pieta and proudly supported by Electric Ireland, this year’s event will take place as the sun rises on Saturday, May 10, and will see thousands of participants come together at the 10 official walks across Northern Ireland.

The Northern Health and Social Care Trust is working with Compassionate Communities NI and Libraries NI to get more people talking and reading about death. As part of this collaboration, the area’s first Death Positive Library opened in Cookstown last year, and the service has now been extended to Magherafelt and Draperstown, giving people access to a range of books on dying, death and bereavement, and enabling readers to explore ideas and thoughts from a range of different perspectives.

A new campaign has been launched in community pharmacies across Northern Ireland to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of cancer and help with early diagnosis. The ‘Be Cancer Aware’ campaign is running in community pharmacies this April and May as part of the Living Well service. It highlights the role of pharmacy teams in providing advice and support, and encourages people who may be experiencing possible cancer symptoms to talk to their GP.

Two proud sisters from Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, are taking part in the Belfast Marathon next month to honour the memory of their father, who tragically died of a cardiac arrest 10 years ago. Michelle Smith, 34, and her sister Breege Cassidy, 32 will take to the start line at Stormont on Sunday, May 4, to raise awareness of the impact of sudden cardiac death. Their dad John was only 59 when he died and should have been celebrating his 60th birthday the following year.
