Gerald Caplan previously described the stages of mental health crises as a loss and return of homeostasis. This hermeneutic phenomenological study explored personal narratives of crisis to more deeply understand the temporal sequencing of crisis.

1 Introduction A mental health crisis has been described as an ‘acute disruption of psychological homoeostasis in which one's usual coping mechanisms fail, and there exists evidence of distress and functional impairment’ [1]. Throughout this paper, the term ‘crisis’ refers broadly to experiences of mental health crisis. Experiences of crisis are common and frequently require connection with others to resolve [2].
