The market started strongly on Monday morning following news that tariffs on various electronic devices and semiconductors were being delayed. A strong open on Monday is generally an invitation to reduce exposure, especially when the market is as volatile as this one. The indices were nearly back to flat when Fed Governor Christopher Waller stated that the inflationary impact of tariffs was likely to be temporary and interest rate cuts were "very much" on the table.

Last week was a good one for investors, at least for the ones able to maintain their focus and composure in an increasingly tumultuous market environment. The Nasdaq ended the week 7.3% higher than where it was starting Monday. The S&P 500 was up 5.7% and the Dow rallied nearly 5%. Of course, to garner those stock gains investors had to through a roller coaster of a week with massive daily gyrations. It was enough to give some angina even to long-time market veterans.

Unsurprisingly, a gap-up open on Monday morning is being sold. When the market is as volatile as it has been lately it is typically a good idea to reduce positions into strength rather than trust that positive momentum will develop. After the initial selling, we will see if there is underlying support, but news risk is extremely high. What the market desperately needs right now is news about trade deals with individual countries.

Regular readers know that we increased our target price on Palantir Technologies (PLTR) last Thursday, from $110 to $116, based on an improved technical picture. The stock is up almost 7% early on Monday morning. We talked about the technicals. We talked about Q1 earnings expectations. We should get those numbers on or around May 6. Equities enjoyed a massive relief rally on Wednesday, where the Nasdaq had its second-best day in its history. The rally, however, turned out to be extremely short-lived. After rising better than 12% the day before, the tech-heavy index gave back just over 4% on Thursday. The other major indexes barfed up similar sized gains from the previous day’s trading session. All of this was due to evolving trade and tariff policies.

Regular readers on TheStreet Pro well know that I have been long Wells Fargo (WFC) for some time on the expectation that sooner or later (perhaps this year), the Fed would decide CEO Charlie Scharf and his team had done enough to make amends for the bank's scandal-ridden, semi-recent past and lift its asset cap. I have sold some on the way down, and this has not been a poor investment. Even down 22.6% from its February high, I am still up 20% on WFC.
