TORONTO — The Detroit Red Wings capped their season by blowing a two-goal lead against a playoff bound team that had nothing to play for but home fans. The Wings settled for a point Thursday at Scotiabank Arena, falling 4-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime after leading by a goals with 1.8 seconds to play. That leaves the Wings 39-35-8 and with 86 points on the 20244-25 season. They've been eliminated from the playoff race since last weekend, but finished on a 3-0-1 roll.

The Detroit Red Wings will play their final game against the team home to a player who could alter their future. Mitch Marner is a pending unrestricted free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he's the kind of impact forward the Wings desperately need as they try to overturn what is now nine straight years of missing the playoffs. The 2024-25 Wings weren't good enough down the stretch, and without dramatic improvement, that's the forecast again for next spring. Marner turns 28 in May.

RED WINGSThe Detroit Red Wings continue to play hard, facing the end on a high note. They won their third consecutive game Wednesday at Prudential Center, defeating the playoff-bound New Jersey Devils, 5-2, in what was the Wings' penultimate outing of the season. The Wings (39-35-7) have won one game before and two after they were eliminated from the 2025 playoff race. Even as they have nothing left to fight for, the focus has been on finding meaning in the final week.

Trent Yawney dropped a nugget of wisdom in his first media appearance of the season, one that he and Todd McLellan have preached since they joined the Detroit Red Wings at Christmas. In response to a question about how they've sought to change the culture and what remains important, Yawney pointed to habits. "Bad ones are harder to break than good ones are to develop, so Todd has made point of, why do you want to give anything back," Yawney said.

At least the future will be on display soon to brigthen the present. On the same day the Detroit Red Wings were eliminated from the 2025 NHL playoff race, Wings prospects Axel Sandin Pellikka and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård were freed up when their club, Skellefteå, was eliminated from the Swedish Hockey League playoffs. That cleared the way for both to join the Wings organization and play some more hockey in North America.
