Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa's development is taking longer than some fans anticipated. Cossa had a strong start to the 2024-25 AHL season but struggled later in the year and in the playoffs. Cossa is expected to spend another year in the AHL before potentially joining the Red Wings. Goaltending is always a hot topic for any NHL team that doesn't boast an elite performer between the pipes, and that includes the Detroit Red Wings. They did use a first-round pick on a goalie in 2021, though, and curiosity about where Sebastian Cossa fits into the picture is the topic of this Wings mailbag. Free Press reader G. Jensen wrote to ask, "Are we going to see Cossa in Detroit before he's 100 years old?"

The 2025 NHL draft lottery went as expected for the Detroit Red Wings: They were pushed back. Held May 5 in Secaucus, New Jersey, the Wings emerged with the 13th pick, one back from where they lined up with finishing 21st (39-35-8) out of 32 teams when the regular season ended on April 17. The New York Islanders won the draw to pick first. The Wings had an 85.7% chance of picking 12th, but were bumped when Utah Hockey Club got lucky.
