Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed direct peace talks with Ukraine to "eliminate the root causes of the conflict" after Ukraine proposed a 30-day ceasefire with the backing of NATO powers. Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, sparking a conflict that has since seen about half a million casualties, according to estimates by US officials, and led to the displacement of an estimated 3.7 million people. Mr Putin said he would propose peace talks during a visit to Istanbul on May 15.

Julian Assange has given evidence about his years of incarceration in a high-security UK prison, after the United States charged him under the Espionage Act. His address to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) focused heavily on the theme of freedom of speech. PACE will debate and vote on a draft resolution following on from Tuesday's evidence. Julian Assange is back on European soil. When last here, he was behind bars.

A policeman picks through charred vehicles on an isolated road in Pakistan's Balochistan province. The burned-out vehicles and bodies are all that remain after the attack in which 23 civilians were killed, part of the largest coordinated assault in recent years by an ethnic separatist terrorist group. Local officials said they were killed in a roadside attack after armed men checked passengers' IDs, before starting to shoot them and torch their vehicles.

Gaza has recorded its first confirmed case of the deadly disease polio in 25 years. The Palestinian Health Ministry says an unvaccinated 10-month-old baby in Deir al-Balah first displayed symptoms of the virus. Tests conducted in Amman, Jordan, confirmed that the infant had the highly infectious virus. More cases are suspected in the war-torn territory. Test results from three children displaying apparent symptoms are currently being processed in Jordan.
