KUALA LUMPUR: An officer bearer of Bersatu told the High Court today that the party did not respond to lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla’s claim for RM12.5 million in legal fees for services rendered. Executive secretary Suhaimi Yahya said Bersatu received the invoice and subsequent reminder notices from Haniff between January and March 2021 for payment of the invoiced sum.

KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer has denied that a bill for RM12.5 million issued to Bersatu for legal services rendered to the party is “exorbitant” or “grossly excessive”. Haniff Khatri Abdulla told the High Court he had acted for Bersatu since 2016, when the party was in the process of being set up. “I was involved in many things (from) giving advice to reviewing (election) candidates. In fact, instructions (from party leaders) came from time to time and they were not in written format.

PUTRAJAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak’s 1MDB defence in the High Court concluded today after 58 days of trial. Lawyer Shafee Abdullah told Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah that the defence was wrapping up its case today, after calling its last witness, Tay Eue Kam. The hearing for the defence began on Dec 2 last year. A total of 26 witnesses were called, including former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng, former inspector-general of police Fuzi Harun and ex-1MDB chairman Lodin Wok Kamaruddin.

PUTRAJAYA: A forensic document examiner told the Najib Razak 1MDB trial today she could not determine the veracity of signatures on several company documents allegedly signed by the former prime minister. Tay Eue Kam said she only received photocopies of the documents, including the minutes of a meeting between 1MDB’s board of advisers chairman (Najib) and then company CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi.
Man charged with ‘concealing’ RM98,000 in bank account

KUALA LUMPUR: A project executive was charged in the sessions court here today with assisting in “concealing” a sum of RM98,000 belonging to another person and transferring it to his own account. Hazwan Wook Baharudin pleaded not guilty to the charge of fraudulent concealment of property under Section 424 of the Penal Code before judge Azrul Darus. The offence allegedly took place on Feb 26 at Jalan Klang Lama here. If found guilty, Hazwan could face up to five years in jail, a fine, or both.

Nigerian man denies biting policeman’s ear

KUALA LUMPUR: A Nigerian man claimed trial at the magistrates’ court here today to wounding a policeman by biting the latter’s left ear. Okenyehke Kelvin Obianke was slapped with one charge under Section 325 of the Penal Code for causing grievous injury to officer Danierul Azraq Ahmad Khair’s left ear last Friday. The alleged offence took place in front of a clinic in Metro Prima, Kepong. If found guilty, Okenyehke will face a jail term of up to seven years and a fine.
