As Cabrini University faces the somber reality of indefinite closure at the end of the school year, the echoes of a storied basketball program resonate one last time on the court. The final chapter unfolded on Saturday, Jan. 27th, as over 100 proud alumni, spanning decades of Cavaliers’ history, gathered to enjoy an emotionally charged and memorable last alumni game. The Cabrini basketball program was initiated in 1975 and has been an integral part of the university’s sports history for 49 years.

As Cabrini University undergoes its final semester, several teams are gearing up for their last season. They face challenges such as low roster numbers and the struggle to stay competitive. The softball team, boasting six Atlantic East Conference Championships, mirrors these difficulties with only 10 players on its roster, leaving minimal room for injuries. Despite this challenge, the team is determined to work harder and unify to pull off a seventh Atlantic East Conference championship.

This year marks the Loquitur’s 65th anniversary. The new year stirs up many emotions. With the calendar turned over to 2024, people begin to set goals, establish healthy habits, and look forward to a year of personal growth. For Cabrini students, seeing the year 2024 plastered everywhere brings about a different feeling. When we see 2024, it’s hard not to think about how we are getting closer to the day where Cabrini University will be no longer.

As students submit their final exams and head home for winter break, Loquitur’s Editor-in-Chief Chris Perri, and Breaking News Coordinator Jason Fridge met with President Helen Drinan to discuss the semester, the Villanova deal, and goals for Cabrini’s final months. What stood out to you this semester as indicators that the Cabrinian spirit is alive and well? To start, one of the best moments was when students arrived back to campus. You can imagine it was pretty sober around here all summer.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, undergraduate students gathered at Widener Lecture Hall for a meeting with Cabrini President Helen Drinan and Dr. Michelle Filling-Brown, dean of Academic Affairs. The forum, hosted by the Student Government Association, allowed students to learn more about the Villanova deal’s future and present any questions they may have. Cabrini will celebrate its final graduating class in spring 2024. Beyond that point, students who haven’t graduated will not be considered alumni.

In 1958, the was invented. William Higinbotham, who was a physicist, invented this simple tennis game called “tennis for two”. This led to generations of fun, online connections and the escape of the real world. Since then, video games have evolved into top entertainment for all ages. According to , the largest group of gamers are ages 18 to 34, meaning college students tend to play a lot of video games. Though many other ages partake in video games, this age group came from the peak of video games.

In honor of Native American Heritage month, Dr. Jim Hedtke, professor of history and political science, gave a lecture on Ely Parker November 28th, 2023, in the Iadarola lecture hall. Parker was a Tonowanda Seneca man who played a pivotal role in American history, yet whose story remains largely unknown. The lecture was sponsored by the Wolfington Center, and Cabrini’s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

With the holiday break approaching, Cabrini students and faculty will have a month long break for some much–needed personal time. This break gives Cabrini community members a chance to practice different traditions, and festivities. Cabrini is a diverse campus, and community members all celebrate in their own special ways. Cabrini’s Center on Immigration has a new partnership with the Free Migration Project. The Center on Immigration is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization, whose mission is to advocate for a more just immigration system. The Free Migration Project (FMP) is a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia that has been partnering with the Center for multiple years. Both organizations worked together to form part of the Shut Down Berks Coalition.

What a time to be a Philly sports fan. Over the last two years, Philadelphia sports fans were treated to remarkable playoff runs, spectacular moments, and seasons that will be talked about for years to come. Between the Phillies’ Red October postseason campaigns, the Eagles’ 2022-23 run to the Super Bowl, and the Sixers consistently being a playoff contender, Philly teams have served as a memorable backdrop for the college experience.
