Cabrini’s 64th and final commencement ceremony is right around the corner, and before students receive their degrees on Sunday, May 19, we now know they will be addressed by alumnae Kylie McDevitt Kelce and Dr. Rachel Slaughter. Kelce will speak at the 9:30 a.m. undergraduate ceremony and Slaughter will speak to all graduate students at 1 p.m.Kelce has been making headlines across the country as she has made herself a houshold name in the Philadelphia area.

In any graduating class, there are some individuals who will always be remembered. Whether it’s the class clown, the best athlete, or the student body president, these are the people who become hot topics at class reunions decades after walking across the stage. Near the top of that list is the valedictorian, the title for the highest performing student of a graduating class. Many students devote their entire academic career to work for this illustrious title.

Throughout the first month of the semester, there’s been a new crowd around campus. Seen checking out classrooms and buildings, these individuals are representatives from Villanova touring with members of Cabrini’s facilities staff. In early February, faculty and staff members were alerted that a three-person team from the Space Management Group, representing Villanova University, would be inspecting the entirety of Cabrini’s campus.

Over winter break, students were faced with the decision to transfer or remain at Cabrini. Many students are heavily involved on campus, through athletics, clubs, or other campus organizations and don’t want to abandon those commitments. Dominic Petruzzelli, a sophomore math and secondary education major, transferred to Neumann University during winter break. Several important factors played into his decision to leave Cabrini.

On November 7, an open mic night, usually a popular event, was supposed to happen in The Grill. This event was hosted by Cavalier Radio and nobody signed up to attend, and the event was an absolute bust. There were many emails sent to students and posters advertising the event. Students saw these, and still stayed away.Cabrini University has a rich history of on-campus events. However, over the years, because of a decrease in the student population, attendance at campus events have plummeted.

As students submit their final exams and head home for winter break, Loquitur’s Editor-in-Chief Chris Perri, and Breaking News Coordinator Jason Fridge met with President Helen Drinan to discuss the semester, the Villanova deal, and goals for Cabrini’s final months. What stood out to you this semester as indicators that the Cabrinian spirit is alive and well? To start, one of the best moments was when students arrived back to campus. You can imagine it was pretty sober around here all summer.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6, undergraduate students gathered at Widener Lecture Hall for a meeting with Cabrini President Helen Drinan and Dr. Michelle Filling-Brown, dean of Academic Affairs. The forum, hosted by the Student Government Association, allowed students to learn more about the Villanova deal’s future and present any questions they may have. Cabrini will celebrate its final graduating class in spring 2024. Beyond that point, students who haven’t graduated will not be considered alumni.

“Merry Little Christmas” was a beloved daylong tradition at Cabrini for many years. However, this year saw its final run on December 3. Dr. Michelle Filling-Brown, dean of Academic Affairs said, “There are so many people across campus who help bring this day together. From campus ministry, to the president’s office, to SEaL.” The event includes many stations throughout the campus for all to enjoy.

In honor of Native American Heritage month, Dr. Jim Hedtke, professor of history and political science, gave a lecture on Ely Parker November 28th, 2023, in the Iadarola lecture hall. Parker was a Tonowanda Seneca man who played a pivotal role in American history, yet whose story remains largely unknown. The lecture was sponsored by the Wolfington Center, and Cabrini’s Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.

With the holiday break approaching, Cabrini students and faculty will have a month long break for some much–needed personal time. This break gives Cabrini community members a chance to practice different traditions, and festivities. Cabrini is a diverse campus, and community members all celebrate in their own special ways. This begs the question, what different types of traditions are Cabrini community members practicing, and celebrating during the holiday break?
