Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects people from ethnic minority backgrounds1. Ethnic minority groups have increased requirements for renal replacement therapy secondary to kidney failure, owing to faster progression of CKD and reduced mortality before dialysis2. The mortality rate is lower for people from ethnic minorities with established kidney failure after starting dialysis, a phenomenon observed across different countries and registry reports3,4.

Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for people living with kidney failure who are suitable for surgery, but survival benefits for older and/or ethnic minority candidates are unclear. To inform decision-making, the survival of patients on a waiting list for kidney transplantation was assessed. A retrospective study was undertaken of registry data for patients with kidney failure listed for transplantation in the UK.
