1 INTRODUCTION The budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an invaluable workhorse of biotechnology and is used to produce an array of important industrial chemicals, including biofuels, food additives, and pharmaceuticals (Hong & Nielsen, 2012). Maximizing or fine-tuning metabolite levels is crucial to most strain engineering activities.
