1 Introduction Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), also known as quaternary ammonium salts and quaternary amines, are a class of organic compounds containing four substituents (R) that are bound to the positively charged central nitrogen atom in one molecule. These substituents replace the hydrogen atoms in the ammonium ion (NH4+), and the chemical structure of QACs can be represented as NR4+.
