The New York Times yesterday (11 March 2025) headlined: “Trump Intensifies Statehood Threats in Attack on Canada.” What particularly stood out was the sub headline: “The U.S. president on Tuesday reiterated his claims on Canada’s territory as he increased tariffs, threatening to bring the country’s economy to its knees.”How are Canadians supposed to feel about being threatened? How are Canadians to feel about the indignity of being brought economically to their knees?

Trump’s threat that all hell will break loose if Israeli hostages are not released by the time he takes office is something he will probably hold fast to. A Palestinian colleague tells me: This could well be Trump’s threat to Israel. As a transactionalist, ideologue, Trump has his share of business-style agendas. He wants the normalization schema and route to stay undeterred. But to reach Syria and UAE, he cannot preside over an ethnic cleansing as Biden might have done.

Occupied Palestine (Quds News Network)- Around 200 Israeli soldiers have signed a letter stating they’d stop serving in Gaza if the government didn’t secure a ceasefire. The soldiers acknowledged their involvement in war crimes, including the indiscriminate killing of Palestinians and the destruction of homes. According to The Associated Press ( AP), while the movement is small, the soldiers say it’s the tip of the iceberg and they want others to come forward.

It has been over a month since the Palestinian Authority launched a deadly military operation in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank. So far, at least 14 people, including six members of the PA forces, have been killed during the operation, which is purportedly targeting armed Palestinians in the camp with the aim of disarming them. But just like the Israeli assaults on which it appears to be modeled, the violence and siege tactics indiscriminately harm local residents.

Such decisions to sanction the ICC by Representatives of Congress erodes the ability of the high court to adhere to the principles of “ International Humanitarian Law, whose purpose is to reduce suffering during war”.
