What makes something a SOPHIE track? “Girls State” (2024), directed by Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine, is a necessary companion piece to the 2020’s “Boys State” by the same directors. For its tonal shift away from the political thriller style of the first documentary, to a broader consideration of the impacts of a program like Boys State, Girls State and Boys & Girls State, I have to applaud the directors for encapsulating what I think is an important piece of the program: losing.
