A year ago today, I was preparing, as First Minister, to speak to the Scottish press to condemn the atrocious attacks carried out by Hamas the day before. In doing so, I knew that I could well be putting the lives of my in-laws, who were trapped in Gaza, at risk. There is not a reasonable person in the world that looked on at the images of the attacks on October 7, 2023 and could feel anything other than horror and revulsion.

Mr Yousaf - the first ethnic minority leader of a devolved government and the first Muslim to lead a major UK party when he became SNP leader and Scotland's first minister in March 2023 - described the past week of unrest as "utterly horrendous". Violent disorder has taken place in cities across England and in Northern Ireland following the killings of three young girls in Southport last week. The unrest has been fuelled by misinformation online relating to the attacker.

Humza Yousaf and his wife have had a new baby girl. Nadia El-Nakla gave birth to Liyana Jenin Yousaf on Wednesday and both are well, the former first minister said on X. Mr Yousaf said his daughter and stepdaughter are happy and excited to welcome their baby sister.

In 2024, almost half the world’s population will take part in elections. Many countries have already gone to the polls, and in a number of countries, particularly across Europe, the biggest gains have been made by those who make a living out of vilifying Muslims. I am, proudly, a western Muslim.
