A year ago today, I was preparing, as First Minister, to speak to the Scottish press to condemn the atrocious attacks carried out by Hamas the day before. In doing so, I knew that I could well be putting the lives of my in-laws, who were trapped in Gaza, at risk. There is not a reasonable person in the world that looked on at the images of the attacks on October 7, 2023 and could feel anything other than horror and revulsion.

In 2024, almost half the world’s population will take part in elections. Many countries have already gone to the polls, and in a number of countries, particularly across Europe, the biggest gains have been made by those who make a living out of vilifying Muslims. I am, proudly, a western Muslim.

We always knew it was a good day when dad came back from work with gulab jamin, a South Asian dessert so sickly sweet it makes tablet taste positively sour. When the results of the Scottish devolution referendum were confirmed on 12 September 1997, dad, an SNP member since 1972, brought home mountains of gulab jamin in celebration of the result.
In truth, I have little memory of the 1997 Labour landslide and the subsequent Scottish devolution referendum.

The SNP politician is relentlessly told to “go home” and referred to in offensive terms like “P**i” and “brown boy”. And an analysis of social media posts on X shows the level of hate increased in the days before and after his resignation last week. Some of the posts had been viewed nearly half a million times according to tools which check the impact of posts on X.
