On Wednesday, the province proposed extending strong-mayor powers to 169 municipalities across Ontario with councils of six or more members. Should it go ahead, 12 mayors across Simcoe County will be granted additional sway, including the ability to unilaterally hire and fire a chief administrative officer or veto bylaws they feel aren’t in line with the provincial priority to build new homes.

An Ontario court has upheld Tiny Township’s short-term rental bylaw. On March 24, Superior Court of Ontario Justice Howard Leibovich turned down the legal challenge filed by the group Tiny Township Association of Responsible STR Owners, also known as Responsible Hosts of Tiny, against the municipality’s 2022 STR bylaw. The bylaw requires STRs to be licensed and capped licences at 300.
