IntroductionAcute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a life-threatening condition first observed and described in the 1960s as the clinical presentation of acute hypoxemia due to pulmonary gas exchange failure in critically ill adults and children (1). ARDS is a complex syndrome, it cannot currently be diagnosed through laboratory tests, imaging, or any other “gold standard” techniques, and current treatments are based solely on supportive care and mechanical ventilation.
